Issues with fly-tipping, odour and obstructions to a parking court in a Norwich neighbourhood have been solved thanks to an ultra-modern bin store with a ‘living’ roof.

The firm Metrostor has installed the wooden, green-roofed structure at Bertram Way in Thorpe Hamlet.

The project was funded and managed by Flagship Group, which owns a number of flats in the area and received a grant of £10,000 – a third of the total project cost – from its supplier, Travis Perkins, for the project.

Joe McNeill, neighbourhood operations manager at Flagship housing association, Victory Homes, said: “Residents in Bertram Way made us aware of some issues with the bins, so we looked at designing something that is a lot more modern, firesafe, and eco-friendly with the ‘living’ green roof. The new bin store looks great, it’s lockable and it’s a lot tidier.”

Low-maintenance sedum plants  - which are now becoming a common feature on the tops of bus shelters - are growing above the bin store.

Flagship worked in partnership with Norwich City Council (NCC) on the project to ensure the bin store was accessible for refuse collectors.

Peter Chambers, environment services officer at NCC, said he was delighted to have worked with Flagship on the project.

He said: “It’s important to have collaborative working on these sorts of schemes, so all parties can achieve the results they want, which is maximum recycling rates, minimal fly tipping and satisfied customers.

“The more green roof spaces we can tie into the green corridors in the city the better.”
